What is an answer engine?

An answer engine is a search system that responds to a query with a single synthesised answer instead of a ranked list of links. Systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Claude read multiple sources and compose one response, so a brand is either included in the answer or absent from it.

A traditional search engine takes a query and returns a ranked list of pages, then leaves the choosing to you. An answer engine does the reading itself. ChatGPT with search enabled, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Claude all work this way: they retrieve a set of sources and compose a single written response from them, usually citing only a handful of the pages they drew on.

This collapses the idea of ranking. On a results page, position four still gets clicks. In a synthesised answer there is no position four. The engine either names your brand or it leaves you out, and a competitor who does get mentioned takes the enquiry that would once have been split across ten links. Visibility stops being a gradient of positions and becomes closer to a yes or no.

Being in the answer is only half of it, because the engine also decides how you are described. In a July 2026 test of 30 brands, 27 (90 percent) were misdescribed when the AI answered from memory alone. With live web search switched on, that fell to 13 out of 30 (43 percent), which is an improvement but still means nearly half the brands were described wrongly. An answer engine can include you and still send buyers away with outdated pricing or a garbled account of what you sell.

The practical response is to treat answer engines the way you once treated rankings: measure where you stand, then close the gaps. Discoverable's free AI visibility checker shows how an AI engine currently describes your brand, with no login needed. It runs via Claude with live web search, and further engines are rolling out. The free AI crawler checker tests whether your robots.txt blocks the 12 AI crawlers that feed these systems, and whether you publish an llms.txt file. Paid plans re-run the visibility check automatically each week and keep a score history, so you can see whether your presence in answers is improving over time.
