What llms.txt does, without the hype
AI assistants build answers from what they can read. robots.txt controls whether crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot may read your site at all (check yours here). llms.txt goes one step further: it hands any system that fetches it a short, curated summary of who you are and where your important pages live, in a format designed to be read by language models rather than browsers.

What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org): a markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that gives AI systems a curated map of your site, with the site name, a one-line summary and links to your most important pages. It is the AI-era cousin of robots.txt: robots.txt says what crawlers may read, llms.txt says what they should read first.
Does llms.txt actually improve AI visibility?
Honestly: adoption by the major engines is still unconfirmed, and no engine has committed to reading it. The case for having one is cost and asymmetry. It takes minutes to create, cannot hurt, some AI tools already fetch it, and if engines adopt the standard you are early. Treat it as cheap insurance, not a ranking lever.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?
Upload it to your web root so it is reachable at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, the same place robots.txt lives. On most platforms that means the public or static folder of your site. After deploying, open the URL in a browser to confirm it loads as plain text.
What is the correct llms.txt format?
An H1 heading with your site name, a blockquote line summarising what the site is, then markdown link lists grouped under H2 headings such as Main pages and Optional. Keep it short and curated: the file is a reading guide for machines, not a full sitemap.
