Agentic commerce
Agentic commerce is the buying of goods and services by an AI agent acting for a human: the person states what they need, and the agent finds suitable options and completes the purchase, often without the buyer visiting any brand website.
A typical agentic purchase starts with a one-line request. A buyer asks an assistant for a waterproof hiking jacket under 200 dollars; the agent reads reviews and comparison pages, then settles on a product. On supported platforms it can pay too: OpenAI's Instant Checkout, built with Stripe on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, already completes orders inside ChatGPT for participating Etsy and Shopify sellers, and Google's Agent Payments Protocol covers similar ground.
The visibility problem carries over directly from AI search. Agents build shortlists with the same models and retrieval that power assistant answers, so a brand the model cannot describe accurately never reaches the buyer's screen. In our July 2026 study, 27 of 30 brands were materially misdescribed by an AI assistant answering from memory, and 13 of 30 were still misdescribed when the assistant used live web search. An agent working from those descriptions shops accordingly.
The inputs an agent relies on are ordinary web assets a brand can audit. Product pages need schema.org Product and Offer markup with accurate prices and stock status, because agents parse structured data before prose. Off-site surfaces such as Reddit threads and G2 review profiles shape which brands the underlying model trusts enough to shortlist. Agentic commerce is early. Most assistant-driven shopping still ends with a recommendation and a link rather than a completed order, and the checkout protocols launched in 2025 cover a limited set of merchants. The practical point is narrower: assistants already handle the research step for many purchases, so a brand that is described accurately in assistant answers is positioned for agents as well, whether or not the agent presses the final buy button.
