What is a knowledge graph?

A knowledge graph is a structured database of entities, such as companies and products, and the relationships between them; AI systems consult graphs like Google's Knowledge Graph and Wikidata to establish basic facts about a brand before answering.

The two knowledge graphs that matter most for brands are Google's Knowledge Graph, which powers knowledge panels and feeds Google's AI surfaces, and Wikidata, the open database that assigns every notable entity a Q identifier. Both store facts as nodes and edges: a company node linked to its founder, founding date, headquarters and products. Language models absorb these records during training, and search-augmented assistants consult them at answer time to check who you are.

When the entity record is thin or shared with a similarly named company, AI answers inherit the problem. An assistant that cannot resolve your brand to a clean entity falls back on scattered web mentions, which is where outdated CEOs and discontinued products come from. Our July 2026 study found 27 of 30 brands materially misdescribed by an AI assistant answering from memory, and 13 of 30 were still misdescribed even with live web search enabled.

Cleaning the record is mostly unglamorous data work. Create or correct your Wikidata item, citing independent sources rather than your own site. Add schema.org Organization markup to your homepage with sameAs links pointing at the Wikidata item and your LinkedIn and Crunchbase profiles, so crawlers can connect those accounts to one entity. If Google shows a knowledge panel for the brand, claim it and suggest corrections. Keep founding dates and leadership names identical everywhere the brand appears.

In Generative Engine Optimization terms, the knowledge graph is the ground truth layer other signals are checked against: a review or news article carries more weight when it attaches cleanly to a known entity. The fastest way to see whether your entity record is hurting you is to read how assistants actually describe the brand. Discoverable's free AI visibility checker returns that snapshot without a login, and a description with the wrong industry usually traces back to the graph.
