Can you list your business on ChatGPT?
By Jonathan DavidEditorial standards
No: OpenAI's developer documentation describes no sign-up that lists a single local business in ChatGPT, the way a Google Business Profile lists you on Google. Shops OpenAI approves can send it product feeds and a shop that sells through Shopify or Etsy is already included, though shopping in ChatGPT is currently live only for users in the US; its Reserve and Get Quote buttons reach businesses through partner platforms in a beta. What you can work on is what ChatGPT reads about you: your own website, and the listing and review sites that describe your business.
Is there a ChatGPT business listing?
A ChatGPT business listing is not something one business can create: OpenAI's developer documentation describes no form, directory or claim process that adds a single local business to ChatGPT. Nothing there works like a Google Business Profile, where you claim a page and edit your own hours and photos. What OpenAI does document are programmes for other kinds of company, run with partners and advertisers it approves.
Shops. Product feeds for merchants OpenAI approves, with shops that sell through Shopify or Etsy already included, and Instant Checkout, which the developer docs describe. The next section covers both.
Booking and quote platforms. OpenAI's local services specification describes a Get Quote button on a local business's card in ChatGPT, through partner plugins that are "currently in beta and being tested with approved partners". ChatGPT shows the button "only when the business has an eligible service provider and that provider has a configured partner plugin". The partner supplies a feed of business records, each with a name, address, map coordinates, phone number, website and the partner's own listing page, so the route is written for platforms that list many businesses. Restaurant reservations work the same way: a Reserve button on restaurant cards, also in beta with approved partners.
Hotels. OpenAI's hotel feed documentation says property feeds "are available only to approved pilot advertisers".
Selling products? ChatGPT's merchant programme
OpenAI's get-started guide for product feeds says onboarding "is currently available to approved partners" and links an application form. The merchants page behind that form says a shop that sells through Shopify or Etsy is already integrated and needs no application, and that shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the US. A product feed carries your catalogue (titles, descriptions, images, prices and stock) so that ChatGPT can show your products accurately when people shop in it.
For a UK shop, one line in the product feed specification matters most: "The standard OpenAI-format upload currently targets the US." The same page says to add other markets "only after OpenAI confirms the integration and its allowed countries and currencies", and that a currency "does not select a destination market", so pricing your feed in pounds does not make it a UK feed.
OpenAI's merchants page also says ChatGPT sends shoppers to your site or app by default, where customers "complete their purchase", and that the protocol behind the feeds supports product discovery today, with the full shopping journey to follow over time. The developer docs describe Instant Checkout, where a shopper pays inside ChatGPT; there you stay the seller, since "OpenAI is not the merchant of record", and you charge the payment through your existing payment processor. Whether shoppers can still buy inside ChatGPT is covered in how to get your products recommended by ChatGPT.
Some goods are excluded whatever you apply for. The get-started guide lists adult content, weapons, prescription-only medicines and "age-restricted products (for example, alcohol, nicotine, gambling)" among them. If you sell services, none of this applies to you.
Can you pay ChatGPT to promote your business?
Yes, through advertising. OpenAI's Advertiser API overview describes an ad account, Ads Manager and an API to "create and manage campaigns, ad groups, ads" in ChatGPT. Where the ads appear and what early advertisers found is in the piece on whether you can advertise your business on ChatGPT.
Where ChatGPT finds businesses instead
Your website. ChatGPT's search features surface websites through a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", recommends allowing it in robots.txt, and notes that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach its systems.
Partner listings. For restaurant bookings, OpenAI's specification says "We treat the business feed as a search index": it finds candidates by matching name and location, then ranks them and removes duplicates by name and address, with phone number and website as further signals. The specifications do not name the partners. OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search says the reservation times it shows may come from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp, depending on the restaurant, and that OpenTable reservations are available globally. Being listed on the booking and quote platforms of your trade, with the same name, address and phone number as on your website, is the part you control.
Yelp. Yelp is one company that has said in public that its content reaches ChatGPT. In its results of 12 February 2026, its chief executive, Jeremy Stoppelman, said Yelp had "recently signed an agreement with OpenAI", and in its results of 6 August 2026 he said "our trusted content is powering local discovery for ChatGPT and other AI partners". Those are Yelp's statements. OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search mentions Yelp as one of those reservation providers, and says Yelp reservations are available in the United States and Canada.
Bing. Microsoft describes Web IQ, its grounding system for AI assistants, as "the same infrastructure powering Copilot, ChatGPT" and others, with Bing's crawl of the web beneath it. Microsoft's own free listing is Bing Places for Business, which puts a business in Bing search results and Bing Maps and can import your details from Google. Neither page says a Bing Places listing reaches ChatGPT, but it costs nothing to claim.
Google. None of the OpenAI pages above mentions Google Business Profile, so whether ChatGPT reads one is not something OpenAI documents there. Google's own AI answers are a different case: its guidance on AI features lists "Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date" among the SEO basics still worth doing for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Review sites and directories that describe you are covered in which review sites AI reads, and the way an answer's shortlist gets built in how ChatGPT decides which businesses to recommend.
What to do this week
1. Let ChatGPT's crawler in. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check that it does not block OAI-SearchBot, or run the free AI crawler checker, which reads your robots.txt and shows whether each AI crawler, OAI-SearchBot included, is allowed.
2. Say what you do, and where, in plain text. Put your business name, what you offer, the towns you serve, your address, phone number and opening hours on your homepage or contact page as ordinary text, worded the same as your listings.
3. Claim the free listings. Claim Bing Places for Business, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and claim your Yelp page if customers in your trade use Yelp. Use the same name, address and phone number everywhere: OpenAI's restaurant booking specification finds and de-duplicates partner listings by name and location, with phone number and website as further signals.
4. Ask your booking or quote platform. If customers book you or ask for quotes through a platform, ask whether it is an approved partner for ChatGPT's Reserve or Get Quote buttons, and complete your profile there.
5. Shops: check whether you are already in, and plan for the US first. OpenAI's merchants page says a shop that sells through Shopify or Etsy is already integrated with no application, and that shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the US. Otherwise apply with the form on that page, and read the feed specification's country rules before you build a feed.
6. See what ChatGPT says about you today. In a temporary chat, ask what a customer would ask, such as "best [your trade] in [your town]", and note whether the answer names you and which sites it cites. Or check if your business is on ChatGPT with the free checker: it puts 3 buyer questions about your category to ChatGPT in a logged-out session, with no login, and shows whether each answer names you and which pages it cites. For a reading every week, Discoverable's plans check your 10 tracked prompts weekly on every AI service they measure, ChatGPT included; see plans and prices.
If ChatGPT never names you, the likely causes are ranked in why ChatGPT doesn't mention your business.
