ChatGPT has stopped citing Reddit

Reddit's share of citations in ChatGPT Search fell by roughly 86 per cent in the first half of August 2026, from about 3.8 per cent of all cited links to 0.5 per cent, according to monitoring data reported by Forbes on 20 August. OpenAI has not said why, and the vendor behind the figures calls them provisional. The useful takeaway is not about Reddit. It is that a single external domain can carry a large share of what an assistant says about your category until the day it does not.

What the data actually shows

The numbers come from an AI visibility monitoring platform that samples ChatGPT Search responses and records which domains get cited. Between 18 July and 7 August, Reddit averaged 3.83 per cent of citations. Between 14 and 17 August it averaged 0.52 per cent. Back in April it was the single most cited domain at 4.14 per cent. Forbes covered the drop on 20 August and Search Engine Journal on 19 August.

Alongside the fall, the same tracking recorded a change in how ChatGPT builds its background searches. On 8 August, the share of its fanout queries using a site: operator jumped from 0.37 per cent to 16.8 per cent, and the number of searches run per response rose from about 1.08 to 1.83. In plain terms, the system appears to be picking specific domains and searching inside them, rather than asking the open web and taking what comes back.

Why the obvious explanation does not quite fit

The site: operator shift is the tidy story, and it may well be wrong. The query change landed on 8 August, but Reddit's citations did not collapse until 14 August, and Search Engine Journal flagged that six day gap as the weak point in the theory. The vendor itself says it cannot rule out a collection problem on its own side. A comparable unexplained Reddit drop happened in September 2025 and did not last.

OpenAI has published nothing about the change and did not comment when asked. Retrieval internals are not public at any of the engines, so anything beyond the observed pattern is inference. Treat this as one vendor's sample showing a large move, not as a confirmed policy at OpenAI.

What it means for your brand's AI visibility

First, scope. This is one engine's retrieval behaviour in one measurement window. Reddit still holds licensing agreements with both Google and OpenAI, its archive still sits in training data, and it still surfaces heavily in Google AI Overviews and Gemini answers. Nothing here says Reddit stopped mattering to the web. It says ChatGPT Search reached for it less during a fortnight in August.

Second, the mechanism, if the site: pattern is real. A system that decides which domains to query before it queries them rewards being a site the model already associates with your category. That is closer to brand recognition than to ranking for a phrase, and it makes your own domain more valuable rather than less, because your pages are the ones an assistant can go and read by name.

Third, concentration. Any brand whose presence in AI answers rested mostly on a handful of Reddit threads just watched that footing move without warning or notice. The same applies to any single review directory, forum or listicle you have been leaning on. Evidence spread across your own site, review platforms, trade press and community discussion survives one engine changing its mind. Evidence parked on one domain does not.

What to do this week

Check your own trend before you change anything. A market-wide average moving does not tell you that your citations moved, and Search Engine Journal made the same point. Run your real buyer questions through ChatGPT with search on, note which domains it cites for each answer, and compare that against what it cited a month ago if you kept a record. If you did not keep one, start now. Our free AI visibility check runs live queries about your brand through Claude with web search and needs no login, and capture for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot is rolling out. For how ChatGPT sources what it says about brands, see our ChatGPT visibility tracker page.

Do not dismantle a Reddit strategy over a fortnight of data. Genuine participation in the subreddits where your buyers ask questions takes months to build and feeds training data as well as live retrieval, and both of those outlast a fanout change. Judge it on whether the community is where your buyers are, not on a citation percentage.

Then do the part that no engine change touches. Pricing, availability, specifications and product status as plain crawlable text on your own pages, matching what third parties say about you, is what an assistant can quote whichever domains it decides to search. In our July 2026 test of 30 brands, 13 of the 30 were still described with at least one materially false claim even with live web search switched on.

The bottom line

A large drop happened, the cause is unconfirmed, and it may partly reverse. What will not reverse is the underlying condition: the engines change how they retrieve without telling anyone, and brands that measured their visibility before the change are the only ones who can tell what it cost them.
