AI brand monitoring

AI brand monitoring is the practice of checking what AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity say about your brand, and tracking how those answers change over time. It treats AI answers as a channel to be watched, the way you would monitor press coverage or search rankings.

The case for monitoring is simple: buyers now ask assistants directly what to choose, and the answer often functions as the shortlist. Unlike a search results page, you cannot passively see these answers. There is no public index of what ChatGPT told someone about you yesterday. The only way to know is to ask the questions your buyers ask and read what comes back.

Accuracy is the sharpest reason to look. In our July 2026 test of 30 brands, 27 were described with at least one materially wrong claim when the AI answered without live web search ([full study](/resources/how-often-ai-gets-brands-wrong)). When an assistant answers from training data rather than the live web, it is working from a stale snapshot, and errors such as wrong pricing or discontinued products presented as current arrive in the same confident tone as everything else.

Useful monitoring covers a few distinct questions. Does the assistant mention you at all when asked category-level questions, or only when asked about you by name? What claims does it make about your product and pricing, and are they true? Which sources does it cite, and do those sources say what you would want said? Bear in mind that answers are non-deterministic: the same prompt can return different results on different runs, so treat any single check as a snapshot rather than a ranking.

Because engines ship model updates and adjust retrieval behaviour without notice, answers drift. A one-off audit tells you where you stood on one day; repeated checks over weeks tell you whether things are moving, and whether a fix you shipped, such as a corrected page or new third-party coverage, actually changed what the assistants say. Where an engine offers modes with and without web access, check both, because they frequently disagree.
