How to get your brand into Google AI Overviews

To get your brand into Google AI Overviews, rank in the organic results for the full cluster of questions behind your target query, put a direct answer in the first sentence of the matching page section, make your brand entity unambiguous with consistent naming and Organization schema, and earn a place on the third-party pages the Overview already cites. None of these steps guarantees inclusion, because the feature is generated fresh for each search, but together they cover every input Google is known to draw on. AI Overviews are written by a Gemini model grounded in Google's search index. The sources it summarizes come overwhelmingly from pages that rank well organically, both for the literal query the user typed and for a set of related sub-queries Google generates behind the scenes. Traditional ranking work still matters, but the target has widened from one query to a cluster.

Rank for the question cluster, not just the head term

When someone searches for the best project management tool for agencies, Google fans that query out into sub-queries about pricing, integrations, alternatives, and comparisons, then synthesizes an answer from top results across the whole set. This is why a page can be cited in an Overview for a query it does not rank first for: it ranked well for one of the fan-out sub-queries. Your job is to map that set. People Also Ask boxes, autocomplete suggestions, and the related searches block at the bottom of the results page are all direct evidence of which sub-queries Google associates with your target.

Cover the set with substance. A single strong page with clearly separated sections for each sub-question usually beats a scatter of thin pages, because links and engagement accumulate in one place and every section can rank as a passage. Reserve standalone pages for sub-queries with real search volume of their own, such as pricing or a named competitor comparison.

Write pages a model can lift an answer from

Phrase your headings as the questions searchers actually ask, then answer each one in the first sentence beneath it. A model assembling an Overview selects passages, and a passage that reads as a complete, self-contained answer is far easier to select and attribute than one that opens with three sentences of scene-setting. Aim for a direct answer of roughly forty to sixty words, then add the caveats, evidence, and detail below it.

Specific passages get selected, so include named products, dates, prices, and version numbers where you honestly can. Keep each section on a single question, because a section that wanders across topics is harder for both rankers and models to match against a sub-query. The same structure earns featured snippets, which draw from an overlapping pool of content.

Make your brand entity impossible to confuse

Google needs to be certain which company you are before it will name you in generated text. Use exactly one form of your brand name everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, review platforms, and press mentions. Add Organization schema from schema.org to your homepage with legalName, logo, url, and a sameAs array linking to every official profile, plus your Wikidata entry if one exists. Inconsistent naming splits your entity across sources and dilutes every signal you build.

Ambiguous entity data does damage well beyond one Google feature. In our July 2026 study, an AI assistant answering from memory materially misdescribed 27 of 30 brands, and 13 of 30 were still misdescribed when it used live web search. Consistent, machine-readable entity data on every surface is the main lever you control for shrinking that error rate.

Get onto the third-party pages Overviews cite

For comparison and best-of queries, AI Overviews tend to cite third-party pages rather than vendors: review platforms such as G2 and Capterra, editorial roundups, and Reddit threads. If your brand is absent from those pages, nothing you publish on your own domain will place you in that Overview. Start by searching each comparison query you care about and listing the pages the Overview cites, or failing that the top ten organic results, since those pools overlap heavily.

Then work through the list. Claim and complete your profiles on the review platforms that appear, and ask recent customers for reviews there, since stale profiles get skipped. Pitch the authors of roundups that omit you with a short, factual case for inclusion. On Reddit, answer questions in your category under a declared affiliation and accept that moderators will remove anything promotional. This is slow outreach work, and it compounds, because the same pages feed answers in ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.

Measure your presence like a rank tracker

AI Overviews vary with location, time, and phrasing, so a single spot check tells you very little. Keep a fixed list of the twenty to fifty queries that matter commercially, and record three things for each on a regular schedule: whether an Overview appears at all, whether your brand is named in the text, and whether one of your pages is cited as a source. A mention without a citation shapes perception but sends no traffic, so track the two separately.

Revisit the log monthly, because the fixes above take weeks to show up and you will only notice movement against a baseline.
