Search Console now shows your AI Overview impressions
Since 31 August, every website in Google Search Console has a report showing how often links to its pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a setting that can take the site out of both. The report counts impressions only, with no clicks, queries or positions. It counts links rather than mentions, so a summary that names your brand without linking to your site does not show up in it.
What the report shows
The report is called Generative AI performance. According to Google's help page, it counts how many times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and two links from your site in the same answer count as one impression in the site total. You can break the count down by page, country, device and date, with dates in Pacific Time. AI Overviews and AI Mode cannot be separated, Discover has its own report, and Search Labs experiments are left out. The newest figures can still change for a few hours, and the usual 1,000-row limit applies.
Google tested the report and the setting with a subset of UK sites from 3 June and rolled both out to every website on 31 August. In the same post it put AI Overviews at more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode at more than one billion.
The opt-out, and what it does not do
The setting is under Settings, then Search generative AI, where you choose to include or exclude your site's links and content. Include is the default. Choosing Exclude stops your pages being linked from AI Overviews, AI Mode and the AI features in Discover, and stops Google using them to ground those answers. Exclusion generally takes a few days, and Google says the choice is not used as a ranking signal anywhere else in Search.
It does not change whether Google trains its AI models on your content, which is what Google-Extended controls, and it is not the same as noindex, which removes a page from Search altogether. Excluding your site takes your own pages out of the summary; reviews, directories and press coverage about you can still appear in it.
On 3 June, the day Google began testing, the Competition and Markets Authority imposed a conduct requirement on Google search that includes controls of this kind for publishers. Google says it has been engaging with regulators, including the CMA, to make sure website owners have the right tools.
What it misses
The report counts links, not mentions, so an overview that names you and links to a review site counts for the review site. It has no queries, so you can see that a page was shown but not which questions it answered. And because AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted together, you cannot tell which one showed your page.
For searches about your own brand the report may look healthy while the summary leans on other sites for what it says. In our search of 50 UK brand names this month, Google cited the brand's own site in 71 of 78 overviews, alongside Wikipedia in 31 and Trustpilot in 26. Read the report next to what the answers actually say. Our free AI visibility check runs live queries about your brand through Claude with live web search and needs no login, and paid plans measure ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode in the same run.
What to do this week
Open Search Console, go to Settings, then Search generative AI, and check it is set to Include, unless you have decided otherwise. Then open the Generative AI performance report, filter the country to the United Kingdom, and note which pages appear. Compare them with the pages that earn clicks from ordinary results, and check that the pages shown most often in summaries state your facts correctly near the top.
Export the numbers once a month. The report is new, and the trend will tell you more than any single month. For how Google picks the sources it cites, see our Google AI Overviews tracker page.
